The missing pieces are the hour of constraint, its duration and the reserve that may not be dispatched. A brief peak, generator coordination and a grid-upgrade delay can all sit behind the same budget line, yet each calls for a different configuration.

Write down the difficult operating period first. That gives the data center energy storage supplier a real basis for MW, cycling, controls and warranty. Keep the UPS brief alongside it, not folded into it. Any intended coordination can then be shown in the approved sequence rather than assumed from the size of the battery.

What data center energy storage can and cannot solve

The International Energy Agency puts worldwide data center electricity use at roughly 945 TWh in its 2030 base case in Energy and AI (2025), with AI contributing the largest portion of the increase. That forecast explains the wider pressure on power systems. For the actual battery calculation, however, use the site’s interval data and the utility’s connection letter.

For a new site, the immediate numbers are much closer to home:

approved import capacity at the point of connection;

expected IT and non-IT load by time interval;

the load expected when the first hall opens;

later expansion stages;

export restrictions; and

the utility study and connection schedule.

A battery moves available energy to a constrained period, so every discharge needs a credible recharge slot. When the facility remains over its connection allowance until late evening, the empty battery may have to wait before it can charge again. Show charging and discharging on the same interval chart. Add any on-site generation using an availability profile that reflects the project, not its nameplate alone.

The site BESS is not simply a bigger UPS

The UPS brief begins with critical loads and continuity. Required ride-through, transfer behaviour and redundancy belong in that brief. A site BESS may exchange signals with the UPS, but the shared communication link does not make their duties identical.

A site BESS normally works at a different level. It may limit grid import, respond to a dispatch schedule or coordinate with on-site generation. The system can be connected and controlled in several ways, but none should be assumed from the battery capacity alone.

“Can the battery provide backup?” is too broad to settle the design. A useful answer describes the sequence, preferably on the single-line diagram rather than in a sales paragraph:

What is the BESS doing during normal grid operation?

What changes when the site reaches its import limit?

What happens when the utility supply fails?

Does the BESS stop, remain grid-following, or enter an approved islanded arrangement?

Which command wins when the UPS, generator and BESS disagree?

Which safe state applies when communications disappear?

Until those points are agreed, equipment lists cannot show how the completed plant will behave.

Read MW and MWh with a clock beside them

MW is the delivery rate; MWh is the energy allowance. Duration links them. Before losses and operating limits, a 10 MW discharge for 15 minutes accounts for 2.5 MWh. A 2.5 MW discharge lasting four hours accounts for 10 MWh. Put duration beside every quoted power value or the buyer cannot match it to the constrained period.

For peak management, mark the constrained intervals and draw the permitted import line across the data. Put the reserve on that same sheet. If the operating rule protects 30% state of charge for a contingency, daily dispatch calculations must stop above that boundary. Otherwise the spreadsheet is selling the reserve twice.

The recharge window belongs in the same brief. A battery that finishes one discharge event may not be ready for the next event unless the grid connection has enough spare capacity to recharge it. This is especially important when the site runs near its import limit for long periods.

A quotation needs one agreed duty cycle

Perhaps Bidder A allowed for weekday cycling while Bidder B allowed for standby duty. Their matching MWh figures hide a different lifetime workload. Issue the cycling schedule with the RFQ and add a return field for exceptions; warranty and price will then share a common basis.

The minimum RFQ pack should contain the following items:

Information to send

Why the supplier needs it

Current single-line diagram

Shows the proposed point of connection and surrounding equipment

Interval load data

Reveals the size and duration of the actual peaks

Import and export limits

Defines what the system may do at the grid connection

Required power and duration

Separates MW duty from MWh duty

Reserve requirement

Prevents the same stored energy being counted twice

Expected cycles or dispatch schedule

Supports degradation and warranty review

Project location and installation type

Affects enclosure, cooling, permitting and service planning

Required control interfaces

Shows where UPS, generator and EMS integration work sits

Add columns for usable MW and usable MWh to the return schedule. Next to them, leave space for temperature basis, state-of-charge window, auxiliary demand and derating. This forces the bidder to show whether its advertised “10 MWh” survives the operating assumptions used for the project.

The connection agreement can change the commercial case

Export and grid-service income often appear in the upside case. Leave them out of the base case until the connection agreement and market rules have been reviewed. The intended service must also fit the protection scheme, anti-islanding behaviour, metering and PCS. Both permission and equipment capability are needed.

Charging deserves the same check. “Recharge overnight” works only if the facility has spare import capacity overnight. Plotting the proposed dispatch over the full load profile will expose that conflict before it becomes a controls problem.

Controls are part of the product being bought

There is often an unpriced space between the BESS controller, UPS controls and the site EMS. Each vendor owns its panel; no vendor necessarily owns the combined response. Close that gap in the scope table by naming the integrator and the tests it must witness before orders are released.

For each signal, record its source, destination and lost-signal response. Rank competing commands in the controls schedule. Include access rights and time-synchronised logs in handover as well. After a trip, the operator should not have to reconcile three clocks before it can understand the event.

Use the approved sequence as the acceptance script. Beyond normal cycling, test the agreed grid-loss response, a communications break and the selected fallback with another asset unavailable. Where measured behaviour differs from the commercial model, close the discrepancy before handover and update the operating instructions.

Site conditions still decide whether the equipment fits

Lay out the delivery route and lifting method before fixing the battery position. Mark service clearance, cable entry and emergency isolation around the equipment. The selected indoor room, cabinet or container arrangement can then be checked for cooling, drainage, fire measures and separation.

Environmental information should use ranges and exposure conditions: temperature, humidity, altitude where relevant, dust, salt and flood risk. The bidder needs these inputs for its proposal. Approval of the final arrangement remains a project decision for the responsible electrical and fire-safety reviewers under local requirements.

WonVolt ကို’ s ကို စက်မှုနှင့် စီးပွားဖြစ် စွမ်းအင်သိုလှောင်မှု ဖြေရှင်းချက်များ နှင့် lithium battery products provide a starting point for equipment discussions.
